Like nearby Bignor Roman Villa, Fishbourne Roman Palace is a fascinating place, particularly for those with a keen interest in the Romans. Here you’ll see what remains of a Roman palatial building that includes courtyards and amazingly well preserved mosaic floors. There’s also a collection of other finds from when the area was excavated.
Chichester Cathedral is an essential part of any visit to this area, with its wonderfully ornate architecture, Romanesque stone carvings and the shrine of St Richard. The cathedral dates back to 1075 and illustrates a variety of different styles. For the best atmosphere it a good idea to visit during Evensong when you can hear the talented choir sing, filling the building with music.
Built around 1712 the Pallant House is an elegant example of late Queen Anne architecture and worthy of a visit in its own right. Works from artists as varied as Lucien Freud, Peter Blake and Pablo Picasso can all be seen, as well as a selection of interesting temporary exhibitions.
